Afropop and Afro-Cuban drumming. Conscious MCs and cutting-edge vocalists. Slam poets and traditional truth-tellers. They all come together for a powerfully diverse day of spoken word, music, and movement dedicated to the late Sekou Sundiata, who performed in the inaugural edition of this now-annual celebration. Poet, storyteller, actor, and musician David Gonzalez, who shared the bill in the first La Casita, will host, performing Sundiata's influential poetry.

Nevada Diggs, Writer, Vocalist, Sound Artist, and Curator; Claudia Norman, Claudia Norman Management; Shawn Termin, Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian; and Rich Villar, Acentos Foundation.

La Casita 2013 is part of Blink Your Eyes: Sekou Sundiata Revisited, a seven-month, New York City-wide retrospective featuring theater, poetry, music concerts, and humanities events curated and produced by MAPP International Productions through a major partnership of 17 cultural and educational institutions. MAPP International Productions gratefully acknowledges the generous funders who have been instrumental in bringing Blink Your Eyes to life: Rockefeller Foundation New York City Cultural Innovation Fund, Surdna Foundation, Lambent Foundation Fund of the Tides Foundation, Leveraging Investments in Creativity, Ford Foundation, Nathan Cummings Foundation, Axe-Houghton Foundation, the New York Council for the Humanities, and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, in partnership with the City Council.
In collaboration with Lincoln Center Out of Doors, on July 18 at 7:30 the David Rubenstein Atrium presents Free: Amplified, a multimedia concert curated and organized by LaTasha N. Nevada Diggs that invokes, remixes, and deconstructs Sekou Sundiata’s only published book of poetry. Free: Amplified ensemble features HPrizm (Anti-Pop Consortium), Tamar-kali, Douglas Kearney, Patrick Rosal, Kamala Sankaram, Jasiri, Val Jeanty, Kassa Overall, and Lisette Santiago.
