Cuban-born, world-class percussionist and singer Pedrito Martínez has recorded and/or performed with many distinguished artists including Paul Simon, Wynton Marsalis, Paquito D’Rivera, Meshell N’degeocello, Eddie Palmieri, and Sting. The Pedrito Martinez Group has its roots planted firmly in the Afro-Cuban Rumba tradition and in the bata rhythms and vocal chants in the music of Yoruba and Santeria. Pedrito and his group perform regularly at Guantanamera in New York City, bringing “complex, blenderized Africa-to-the-New-World-Funk” (The New York Times).

Pedro Pablo “Pedrito” Martínez (b. 1973) from Havana, Cuba, began his musical career at the age of 11, performing as vocalist and percussionist with Cuban legends such as Tata Guines and Munequitos de Matanzas. Since settling in New York City in 2000, Martínez has performed, recorded, and/or toured with Paquito D’Rivera, Meshell N’degeocello, and Sting. Martínez was featured in Calle 54 (2000), a documentary film on Cuban music. Martínez was also a member of the highly successful, Afro-Cuban/Afro-Beat band, Yerba Buena, with which he recorded two albums and toured the world opening for bands including the Dave Matthews Band, Willie Nelson, and Ray Charles. Martínez has lent his talents to over one hundred records, including albums by Paquito d’Rivera, Issac Delgado, and Eliane Elias. Martínez received a Grammy for his collaboration with Eddie Palmieri and Brian Lynch on Simpático (2006) and has been featured on six other Grammy-nominated albums. His group has released a live album recorded at their home gig, Guantanamera, in NYC, and plans are in the works for a studio album soon.
